Program Description:

Digital Intelligence: The Ethics of Emerging Technologies


In a flipped-classroom format, students will watch asynchronous videos featuring Professor Farahany interviewing leading technology, ethics, and policy experts as they discuss relevant and timely topics such as algorithmic bias, the impact of social media on democracy, and privacy in the digital age. Students will meet in small discussion groups with discussion leaders from Science & Society to critically engage with a practical ethics approach to the topics presented in the video. 


Please complete the registration process by clicking the "Apply Now" button. Registrations will be reviewed on a first come, first served basis and your enrollment in this program will be confirmed within 1-2 business days. There are no prerequisites for any Winter Breakaway program, all programs are appropriate for beginners. The registration cap for Digital Intelligence: The Ethics of Emerging Technologies is 60. Please enroll in just one Winter Breakaway program, duplicate registrations will be removed.

Once your enrollment is confirmed, you will be asked to sign a commitment to participate. Please let us know (duke-winterbreakaway@duke.edu) if you need to withdraw, there is no penalty. 

This Global Education Office registration system is being utilized for Winter Breakaway. As such, you will be prompted for family information. This information is not necessary to complete the Winter Breakaway registration.
