Minimum Class Level: Sophomore Duke Administered Program?: NO
Program Description:

There are more than one hundred study abroad programs on the Duke-approved list. If a student is interested in a program not approved or administered by Duke, they must meet with a study abroad advisor to discuss the viability of that program. If the program appears viable, students will be allowed to petition for special permission to receive credit for the program.

All petitions for semester-long programs must be submitted and approved before a student participates on the program.  A Retroactive Petition (this application) is ONLY allowed for summer programs.

If you have already participated on a summer program that you want to seek retroactive credit for, you will need to complete this application, and you will need to meet with the appropriate GEO Regional Advisor. Please request an appointment online at http://globaled.duke.edu/advising.

This application will ask you to share information regarding the program that you have already done, will require you to obtain course approvals from relevant academic departments, and will require you to explain your rationale for having done the program. All programs not appearing on the Duke-approved list must be petitioned if academic (transfer) credit is desired.

Once complete, your petition will be reviewed by the Faculty Global Education Committee.  Note that petition approvals are never guaranteed.

Securing course approvals can take time, as can the application; please begin this process as early as possible.

Petition applications are reviewed monthly, 10 days after the posted petition deadlines.

The petition deadlines during the fall 2019 semester are:

Tues, September 3
Tues, October 1
Tues, October 29
Fri, November 22

We recommend that you plan for the earliest deadline possible.
